The Tipping Point
After nearly a year, I'm finally making my way to the bottom of that Costco pack of Q-Tips. So after nearly 500 Q-Tips, I'm finally publicly posing the question: what is proper cotton swabbing technique? *
That is, what is your Q-tip technique? How often do you de-wax your earholes, and how many do you (have to) use each time? What angles do you insert at, and how far in? Do you swirl it around while rotating, or just roll it around the outside?

This is actually a very interesting topic! my soon-to-be-ex always laughed at me because i first put the Q-tip in my mouth to smooth out the cotton. Then, I insert on side in the right ear and give it gentle, but firm, twirl. Then, put the other side in my mouth, smooth the cotton, and repeat with my left ear. Sometimes I'll inspect the findings, but usually, i'll just throw it away and continue on with my routine. The cleaning of the ears (barring forgetfulness) occurs twice a day - after my morning and evening showers. hee hee
I think it's interesting that you use your lips to smooth out the Q-tip ends first, because I actually like having those ends fluffy like cotton candy. I figure that loft gives it a better cleaning (which is the only reason I would poke a stick in my ear)!
Each time, I grab two (double-ended) swabs. I take one end, and put it in my ear (strangely, always the right first). And then I twist it (rotate) while revolving it around the inner tube of my ear -- in the opposite direction, if that makes sense. That way, the surface of my ear is getting sort of twice the brushing power (as opposed to the other way, which just feels like I'm rolling the thing around in my ear canal) -- try it, you'll know what I mean. Then I flip the swab around and repeat in the same ear -- I find the first one gets most of the moisture (from the shower) away, and the second one gets at cleaning the "good stuff". Then I repeat with the other ear.
After those two swabs are spent, I'll quickly check the swabs for content, consistency, colour, and taste. Hahaha ... once satisfied, they're discarded.
I only do Q-tips every other day, or every third day or so. I don't feel like my ears are that dirty, and if I clean everyday, the Q-tips are so clean that they're practically re-useable! (Don't worry, I don't do that.)
I use qtips all the time. With the amount of hair products I use my ears get pretty gunky. I like to clean the inside first a quick and twist and then a flip to the other end to clean the curvy parts of the outside. soemtimes it's a little disturbing to see the gunk that builds up on the ear part of your ear.

Hmm ... I'm going to try this inside-first-then-outside procedure. Sounds like a good step to having squeaky-clean ears!
Uh ... what kind of hair products are you using that makes the inside of your ear gunky?? Or perhaps the question should be, how are you using those hair products??
If someone has those hairy ears (you know, like those old men with the tufts of hair coming out of their ears), do you think they use hair products on them? Maybe a little volumizer or defrizzers or something? I'll ask next time I see a guy like that.
