I M L I

Whew. Yup, I'm still lactose intolerant. I guess I have to pay the consequences to enjoy my kashi cereal if I want to have it with milk in the morning. Is this something you can train over time? Like, to be more tolerant?

When did you become lactose intolerant? That's news to me.

I probably became LI some time after we stopped drinking milk so regularly. Dad would make us guzzle a full 16oz glass of warm/hot milk every morning to make sure we got our daily calcium in. Sometimes more. And it became a contest on how fast we could get it down, much to the shagrin of my Mom who feared we'd choke on it. I had it down to 10 seconds -- far inferior to Joey Tribbiani's 10-second-gallon-guzzle!

But anyway, I thought it was pretty clear, after we covered topics of (generally) people being lactose intolerant? I guess it can come back at ya (in more ways than one).

eat cereal with soy milk. why does it have to be with cow's milk?

Soy was my suggestion too, but it doesn't taste as good with cerear. Or it'll take some getting used to the difference.

Yeah, I tried for a while to drink my Starbucks drink as a [deep breath] "grande-caramel-macchiato-soy-no-foam-with-whip", but I gave that up. Some things just don't taste "right" with soy milk as a substitute. So I go ahead and enjoy the milk anyway, and then I (and those around me) pay for it afterwards.

I've never tried soy milk with cereal, but I can't see it tasting quite right either. I think I'll just nip that bad-experience-waiting-to-happen in the bud right there. Speaking of which, what's the point of retailing UNsweetened soy milk, anyway? Heck, the sugar brings out the Yummy moleculesin the stuff!

Heheh, I remember the milk contest days.

I was drinking rice milk for a while, but that doesn't taste any better than soy. In fact, it was worse. There is Parmalat - which is good, but roughly double the price.

Here's a bit of info on being LI.

I was told that you can't reverse, because it's a lack of enzymes in the digestive system, as opposed to a level of tolerance. But I'm not entirely sure about this, because... we sure used to be lactose tolerant, so we used to possess the ability to digest lactose.

Hey Ben,

Happy New Year!

I'm LI and what I can recommend that tastes just as close to milk, if not better, is Lactaid! It's a slightly sweeter than regular milk but has the same consistency and taste. I prefer the 100% Lactaid milk (red carton). They also sell fat free, reduced fat, and low fat versions too.

The other thing you can try are lactaid pills. Though how many you take is dependent on how much milk you have in your cup. Like one pill covers a tall and grande Starbucks latte. But for the venti, better pop in two!

Soymilk, I am old school -- I expect soymilk to taste like that of my childhood experience: Chinatown style! Not the kaopectate like ones that they sell in supermarkets.

Thankfully, I can still eat ice cream, yogurts and cheese without much problem. It's just drinking a tall glass of milk that gives me LI! Boo!
